Derail: I think the above sign stole that slogan from the Republican party.
Anytime you hit someone it’s abuse, isn’t it? No matter what?
My mom thinks “spanking” is not hitting and not abuse.
I strongly feel that hitting in any situation is abuse, please, please, reblog if you agree. Spread this. I want to prove a point, not just to her but to myself.
I’ve posted this before on Tumblr, but this seems like a good place to do it again. I got spanked as a kid, and it wasn’t traumatic for me. It didn’t hurt, the way my mom did it – not really. And I had a good relationship with her, and she didn’t do it often, and when she did I was being a little shit. So it mainly served to let me know she was super serious this time. Years pass, I meet the girl I will later marry, and we compare notes and find we’re on the same page about spanking. It’s fine, it’s not abuse, we are totally going to spank our kids as needed when we have some.
But then we decide pregnancy sounds horrible and for whatever reason neither of us have that psychological drive to have biological offspring so we say what the hell, let’s do foster care. There are plenty of kids already in the world that need a place to stay. We go to the classes and learn that there a very strict no spanking rule.
This makes sense. These kids may have been beaten. And spanking, no matter how gentle, could trigger existing trauma. And we nod, and start trying to think how we’ll get by without that option. And then the other parents in the class start talking about spanking… sweet Jesus.
All the stories have the same disclaimer: “I turned out fine”.
But the details were all different. Belts, sticks, socks with potatoes in them, fists, boots, wire hangers… my wife and I were horrified. And we realized that these people all thought we were talking about the same thing. My mother’s gentle swats on my butt that barely stung for even an instant through layers of clothing, or beating a child’s bare back with whatever was handy. Same thing. So that was lesson one for us: supporting spanking supports all forms of spanking. You can’t say “spanking is fine” without people around you applying their own definition and that means “beating the living shit out of your kid” for a SHOCKING number of people.
Lesson two came over time, once we had kids: spanking is totally unnecessary. What matters is consistency, love, empathy, and (whenever possible) logical consequences. Our kids aren’t angels, but they’re not brats. They’re really excellent, actually. Spanking. Was. Not. Needed. And from all the people I’ve seen parenting around me over the years, it doesn’t work as well as other methods. Not for the mostly good kids, not for the mostly bad kids. It’s an all around losing strategy.
So even if you want to argue that spanking – the way YOU do it – isn’t abusive, your support of spanking gains you nothing and supports the abuse of others. That’s the best case scenario.
Remember this the next time you want to complain about GMO’s, we may not have done it in a lab but they still are that.
Bananas looked like lemons wtf
Isn’t this more of a combination of selective breeding and GMOs? Not just GMOs?
Yes. But people talk about how GMO’s are “unnatural”, yet for centuries humanity has been exploiting mutations in animals and plants to produce food for themselves.
GMO’s are simply the process of inducing these mutations reliably.
People hear “Lettuce being modified with scorpion DNA” and think that we’re now eating scorpions. But, in reality, they’re taking a tiny bit of scorpion DNA and splicing it into the plant. Why? So the plant will produce poison that is not harmful to humans but will deter insects, reducing the use of pesticide, which CAN be harmful to humans and the environment.
GMOs are producing rice that can survive flooding, which makes rice more reliable yields and will prevent food shortages in poor nations that rely on said crops for staple food.
GMOs are also creating spider-goat hybrids. Why? So we can splice web production into the goat’s udders. We’ll be able to spin huge quantities of spider silk, enough to reliably create spider silk cables and ropes, which have more tensile strength than steel.
I for one am glad I live in a time where watermelons aren’t giant tomato abominations
The issue with GMOs is that corporations like Monsanto are patenting GMOs and arresting indigenous farmers for cross pollinating with they seeds. But there is nothing dangerous about the science.
^This.
The problem isn’t the science, it’s what capitalism does with that science.
That’s not what happened though. They’ve never “arrested indigenous farmers for cross pollination”.
I’ve heard the theory that Kirk’s logs just get circulated round headquarters for lulz before being dumped in the circular file as obvious fabrications by someone bored with a frontier posting.
“Hey, have you seen this one? He says he fought Apollo.”
“What, the old earth probe?”
“Try the old earth GOD!”
“Hilarious! Classic Kirk! That’s better than the time when he was transported to an evil dimenison.”
The reason why in The Naked Now it was Riker who remembered that the previous polywater infection had happened is that he’s the sort of person who would read The Hilarious Adventures of Captain Kirk for fun.
I especially like this idea because of the implication that all the other captains in Starfleet are reporting perfectly ordinary experiences like visiting a space station, dropping off supplies at a colony, bit of a stand-off with some Klingons in disputed space but got out of it unscathed – and then there’s Kirk all, “sorry guys we’ve been off course this week because my first officer seriously needed to get laid (LIKE YOU HAVE NO IDEA MY NECK STILL HURTS)” and “let me tell you about the Chicago Gangster planet” and “WHIPPED AND THROWN IN JAIL BY SPACE NAZIS.”
I actually really like the above explanation
“So wait, they stole his first officer’s brain?”
I always preferred the idea that every single Constitution-class starship of the Kirk era was running into all kinds of insane shit and so the Enterprise’s adventures mostly just got lost in the shuffle.
“Sir, Starbase 12 reports a flock of space sharks cruising through the system. They’re worried about them chewing on the antennae.”
“Can we get the Hood over there to monitor their path and shoo them off if need be?”
“No can do sir, Hood called in two days ago, says the Captain took his security detail down to the local surface to fight an army of evil komodo dragons.”
“Damn. What about the Valiant?”
“Captain says she’s currently engaged in a duel of wits with a clone of Bismarck.”
“Like the battleship?”
“No sir, a clone of Otto von Bismarck, the German chancellor from the 1900s.”
“I’m scared to ask, but where’s the Potemkin?”
“Last reported in pursuit of a super-intelligent shade of blue.”
“God’s sake. What about the Enterprise, are they available?”
I’ve seen several posts going around about obvious furry porn getting put up in high-class art museums, where the general thrust is all “ha ha, those ivory tower snobs don’t even realise they’re putting furry porn in their art galleries, because they’re not Internet Savvy like we are!”
Let’s leave aside for the moment the question of whether this is a reasonable conclusion to draw, and assume for the sake of argument that art museums are, indeed, being bamboozled into putting weird fetish porn on their walls due to lack of cultural context on the part of their curators.
Now, take a step back and consider: what are the odds that this is the first period in history where these sorts of shenanigans have occurred?
Indeed, what confidence do we have that it hasn’t been happening constantly throughout the history of Western art?
How many of the respected works of eras past that we genuflect over every day are, in fact, weird fetish porn that we ourselves lack the cultural context to correctly identify as such?
…are you kinkshaming the Mona Lisa?…
I am absolutely kinkshaming the Mona Lisa.
Okay but I *haven’t* seen these posts going around Tumblr and I’m super curious but also don’t want to Google anything involving the phrase “furry porn” because haha fool me twice shame on me.
You’re a fool if you think science is anything but a human endeavour. Politics aka the issues and ideologies we face as humans will always be apart of our science.
– Cathryn
Exactly.
The Inquisition tried Galileo for heresy in 1633 because of his heliocentric theory, his theory on tides and his theory on comets. They kept him under house arrest until the day he died. Science has always been political and fueled by ideologies.
And as always, the people arguing to “keep politics out of it” are bad people. Michael Shermer? Holy crap, the things this guy has said and done. So this isn’t a surprising thing for him to say.
