Jack found himself being lead through the harshly light corridors of the lab, hands cuffed behind him and a scientist either side of him, gripping his arms to keep him from rubbing. There was another scientist leading the way.
They made their way down the corridor and eventually came to a door, which Dr. Jacobs got his keys out of his pocket and opened. Jack was pushed into the small room, his bare feet stinging slightly upon contact with the cold metal floor and the scientists following close behind. Inside was a desk laden with computers and monitors, more scientists sitting at the desk typing away, and ahead of them was a giant window which lead to another room, this one completely white and empty. Jack recognized this room well: it was the same room he had been shoved into when he first arrived here, left to scream and cry and beg for help. He’d never realized that the scientists had been watching him through the one-way glass the whole time. He shuddered at the thought.
His entrance caught the attention of a man standing behind the scientists seated at the desk. He turned around as one of the scientists closed the door behind them.
“We brought Subject T10 / C0 as you asked, sir.” One of the scientists said.
The man, Dr. Billy Jacobs (aka the lead scientist behind this madness) nodded in satisfaction.
“Excellent,” he said, turning to face Jack. He had a bundle of files in his hand which he handed over to a female scientist stood next to him. “I hope the anesthetic didn’t cause you too much discomfort,” Dr. Jacobs continued, handing the female scientist a pen. Jack didn’t answer for a moment, but instead narrowed his eyes, remembering the previous hour or so he’d spent throwing up all over his cell.
“Oh it was wonderful,” Jack snarled.
“Good,” Dr Jacobs said, not seeming to register the sarcasm, “Now, I’m sure you’re wondering why I called you here, but before I explain…” he looked towards the female scientist, who nodded, placed the files on the desk and left for a moment before coming back carrying a box. She placed this box at Jack’s feet.
“…I’d like to give you a little gift.” Dr. Jacobs finished. Jack frowned. A gift? What gift? Why was he suddenly being given gifts after days of torture and pain? Before he could ask these questions out loud, the scientist behind him unlocked his cuffs, letting his hands free. Jack rubbed his wrists, which were sore from the cuffs, and stared at the box blankly before looking back up at Dr. Jacobs.
“Go on,” he urged, motioning towards the box with one hand, “Open it. It’s for you.”Slowly, Jack bent down, keeping his eyes on Dr. Jacobs the whole time. When he reached the box, he looked at it. It was just a normal, cardboard box; no labels, no nothing. Jack paused. Was this some sort of test? He looked back up at Dr. Jacobs, who said nothing, so Jack slowly opened the box.
Inside were his own clothes.
The same black t-shirt, jeans, and shoes he’d arrived at this place in before they were taken off him and he was forced into a white and black striped top and trousers. He hadn’t seen these clothes in ages. He’d just assumed they’d been destroyed.
He looked back up at the doctor.
“Yes,” he said, “You’ll finally be able to wear your own clothes again. Think of this as a sort of…celebratory present for the experiment being a success. Now, put them on.”
Jack hesitated.
“What….like, right now?”
“Yes.”
“But, I can’t just strip off in front of-”
Jack cried out as a sharp pain exploded in his back. He turned to see one of the scientists holding what appeared to be a police baton.
“Now.” Dr. Jacobs repeated. This time, Jack didn’t argue. His nose still ached from the last time he was hit by one of those batons. The crusted blood still covered his face.Jack picked up the clothes and walked into the corner of the room in an attempt to keep his dignity. He was about to ask everyone to turn around and give him some privacy but decided against it. All he would get for his troubles would be another beating. He stripped off his white and black clothes, revealing the crisscrossed brushes, cuts, and scratches that now covered his body, before putting his old black clothes back on. There was something strange about putting these clothes on: they remedied him of home, of family, of not having a care in the world and making people happy. Thinking about all of this made his heart ache, and tears welled up in his eyes. Noticing Jack’s pause, Dr. Jacobs ordered a scientist to drag Jack back in front of him. Jack’s red tears eyes met Dr. Jacobs cold stare and Jack frantically tried to stop the tears, trembling at the thought of another beating coming his way. When he’d got himself together, Dr. Jacobs spoke.
“That’s more like it. I’m sure you feel better now that you’re in your own clothes.”
He didn’t. He felt awful. He felt like he wanted to die.
“Now, you’re not the only one getting a new set of fabrics,” Dr. Jacobs said, turning to face the large window, “As I’m sure you know, our experiment to extract the human conscience and split it into its individual parts was a massive success. That means we have successfully created 4 living, breathing clones of…well…you, Jack, with one more on the way shortly.” He motioned for Jack to stand next to him, and Jack obeyed. “We are going to have to perform some routine tests on yourself to check there were no side effects, but first, I’d like you to see the fruits of our labor.”With this, a door to the side of the room they were looking into opened and 4 people, all wearing the same white and black outfits Jack had been wearing earlier, were ushered in. For Jack, it was like looking into a mirror, if a mirror could magically split your reflection into 4 completely different human beings. Once they were inside, the clone’s cuffs were removed and a box was placed in front of them. Dr. Jacobs nodded to a scientist sat at the desk, who pressed a couple of buttons on his computer.
“-at’s this for?” Jack could suddenly hear the voice of one of the clones through speakers positioned either side of the room they were in.
“This is a test.” One scientist in the room with them replied, “All you have to do is look inside this box and pick out whatever you like.”
“This is a study of their individuality,” Dr. Jacobs whispered to Jack, “We’ve already studied their abilities, well, most of them anyway. But this way, we’ll discover just how they think and act and how much of their actions are influenced by the section of your conscience they were given-”
Jack didn’t hear a word of what the doctor said. He was too busy staring in horror the clones. They looked exactly the same as him, even down to having the same bright green hair.
You’ve manufactured human beings…Jack thought, Manufactured them for your own selfish gain…he narrowed his eyes, feeling a deep rage begin to seep through him, that’s sick!“I bagsy opening the box!!” Another clone said. Without waiting for an answer, he threw the box open and dove a hand into it, pulling out a white cat mask.
“Awesome!!” He said, putting it on. He stood up and casually waved his hand. A flash of light flew out of his hand, flying across the room and exploding into the back wall, making Jack, the scientists and even the other clones jump.
“Oh…my…god!” The clone shouted, jumping up and down, “This mask gives me super powers!”
“This clone had those abilities before ever seeing this mask.” Dr. Jacobs corrected for Jack, “it’s just not very good at controlling them yet.”
It…Jack thought in his head, that burning anger growing, it…that’s all these people are to you, isn’t it? Objects!
“Ooooh!” Another clone said, pulling a blue mask out of the box, “This looks cool!” He put the mask on, jumped up into the air and flew in circles around the room. “Look at me!! I’m Superman!!” He cried, giggling with delight.
“Oh sweet, a gun!” A different clone said, reaching into the box. His hopeful look faded, however, when he saw the gun was actually a nerf gun. “Goddamn it…it’s a toy. Oh well, it’ll do!”
“Zhis is vhat I was looking for!” The fourth clone said suddenly, pulling a white doctors coat out of the box. He put it on and examined himself. “Perfect!”
“Why is that clone German?” Jack asked. Dr. Jacobs shrugged.
“We were going to ask you the same question.” He replied, “Have you ever wanted to be a German?”
“No…”
“Oh…right…”The female scientist was frantically scribbling in the files with every move the clones made and everything Jack said.
“Is there anything else in the box?” The clone with the nerf gun asked.
“Yep,” the German one replied, pulling out a red spandex suit.
“Mine!” The flying clone said, swooping down and snatching it from the German clone’s hands and flying back up into the air. The nerf gun clone peered into the box and pulled out a grey and red hat, which he promptly placed on his head, before reaching back into the box and pulling out a grey t-shirt and black jeans. The German clone pulled out a light-blue t-shirt, black trousers and a pair of glasses, claiming them as his own. Finally, the clone wearing the cat mask searched through the box for a moment before pulling out a dark blue t-shirt, another pair of black jeans and a black cape, which he gleefully put on. There were a couple more clothing items in the box, but everyone seemed to have had their share, so the box was removed. The clones were then ordered to get changed into their clothes, just like Jack was. And, just like Jack, they weren’t very happy about changing in front of each other.
“Once they’ve changed clothes, we’ll send you into that room to meet them.” Dr. Jacobs said, “It only seems fair that-“However, before he could finish, another female scientist threw the door of the room Jack and Dr. Jacobs were in open and dashed through, panting and crying, covered in blood.
“What the…?” Dr. Jacobs said as he turned to face the woman, “What is the meaning of this?!”
“Escaped…escaped subject…” she replied, struggling to get her breath back.
“Escaped?” Dr. Jacobs repeated, “What do you mean, escaped?!” Before the woman could reply, an inhuman roar echoed throughout the building, followed by another figure entering the room. It was another clone of Jack, wearing the whitened black stripped clothes Jack had been wearing earlier, except this one looked…ill. Its eyes were deathly black, its hair was a grey/purple color, and its skin was turning a sick shade of grey before Jack’s eyes. It staggered in, violently contorting in an inhuman way before righting itself. It growled in sick pleasure before turning to the woman who’d entered earlier and pouncing on her, ripping her apart with ease. Blood spewed everywhere and the scientists began screaming; some tried to subdue the monster while others just ran.
“Oh my god…” Jack muttered, adrenaline starting to pump through his veins at the sight, “Oh my fucking god…”
“Get this subject out!” Dr. Jacobs shouted over the chorus of screaming, pointing to Jack, “We can’t afford to have it die on us!” Before Jack was dragged away, he glanced at the room with the other clones in, who were staring back at him, confused. He knew they couldn’t see anything that was happening due to the one-way glass. but that didn’t mean they couldn’t hear the commotion. He looked back at them sympathetically before his head was forced away as his hands were cuffed once more. The scientists that had dragged him and Jack had only gone a few steps along the corridor when the rogue clone came leaping out of the room, covered in blood. It spotted Jack and growled deeply, though Jack was sure he could hear a chuckle in amongst the growls. In the blink of an eye, the clone sprang on one of the scientists holding jack, forcing him to the ground and ripping into his stomach with his bare hands. The other scientist just stood there dumbly, presumably in shock, before the clone turned on him too. Jack took this as his cue to run. He sprinted down the corridor, suddenly realizing how much harder it was to run with his hand cuffed behind his back but not daring to look back as he heard the screams of the other scientist. He ran blindly for a little longer when he felt something heavy push on his back, forcing him down to the tiled floor. With no hands to stop himself, Jack hit the ground hard and was pretty sure he felt a rib break with the force for the fall. He heard growling in his ear. He struggled and thrashed, but the force pressing on his back didn’t budge.
“You must be Jack…” a voice growled next to his ear said. He heard a giggle. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, my friend.”
“Who are you?!” Jack cried, still struggling under the weight of the clone, tears in his eyes, “What’s wrong with you?!”
The clone laughed.
“The answer to that isn’t very simple,” it replied, leaning so close to Jack that he could see the clone’s black eyes out of the corner of his own, “This body isn’t mine. I simply…borrowed it for a little while. It wasn’t like the scientists were going to do much with this copy anyway.”
“Help!!” Jack cried out suddenly, struggling to breathe under the weight, “Please! Help me!”
“This body is broken, as you can see,” the clone continued, ignoring Jack’s cries, “It’s weak. But YOU, on the other hand…” it grinned, “you would make a brilliant vessel for me. With me in control, you could finally get revenge for all the pain these assholes have put you through. All you have to do it let go…“Jack heard the faint voices of the surviving scientists as they ran towards him. He could barely breathe under the weight, he felt like his lungs were being crushed. He vision swarmed as he felt the weight being lifted slightly; the scientists were trying to lift the clone off Jack. The movement wasn’t enough to stop him from starting to pass to from lack of oxygen. The last thing he heard before the weight was lifted and his airways were open once more was the voice of the clone still speaking in his ear.
“Don’t worry, Jack. We will meet again. Someday…”***
Jack cried out as he violently woke from the dream. He clutched his chest to try and slow his pounding heart as he looked around the room frantically. He was still in his living room; the egos undisturbed by his sudden outburst. The only clone that was awake was Robbie, who was staring at Jack with wide eyes. Jack shut his eyes and tried to calm himself down.
It’s just a dream. That was in the past. Get a grip, Jack.
“Is Jack ok?” Robbie asked timidly, crawling over to get with his stomach close to the ground.
“Yeah…yeah…” Jack replied, opening his eyes again, “I’m fine. Just had a bad dream, that’s all. Why are you awake, anyway? It’s…” he looked at the TV that was still on and checked the TV guide, “…nine in the morning! What the shit?”
“Robbie had a bad dream too…” Robbie replied, scratching at his collar with a leg sheepishly.
“Oh, really?” Jack said, “What was it about?”
Robbie thought for a moment.
“Robbie…dreamt about the day he was created,” he said. The statement made Jack go cold. “He dreamt that the demon got inside him and started making him do things he didn’t want to. He hurt people.”
“Oh…” was all Jack could say for a moment, “That’s…the exact same dream that I had.”
“Huh…that’s odd.” Robbie said. Before Jack could answer, his phone made a ‘ping’ sound, indicating he’d gotten a text. He looked at it.
Robin: hey. The police are coming to talk to you today. They wanted to come yesterday but I convinced them you needed some space. Thank me later. Anyway, they’re coming at 9:30. Good luck!Jack’s eyes widened. He had half an hour to compose himself, wake the egos up, hide them from the police and get the living room sorted.
Fuck. Jack thought.
Welp, Anti thought, speaking for the first time, good luck.
“Get the others awake,” Jack ordered Robbie, “we’re about to have company.”CHAPTER 8: N/A
