When a handful of Westboro Baptist Church members showed up Saturday at the funeral of Orlando shooting victim Christopher Leinonen, counterprotesters donning large, white angel wings were there to shield mourners. Members of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater put together the wings as a symbolic but also literal screen between the WBC and funeral attendees. An Orlando Police tweet later proved the efforts to stop the WBC worked.
Okay, but I’m actually crying tears of frustration, because the article doesn’t even mention the history behind this act.
There’s a reason this was undertaken by a theatre company. It means they knew The Laramie Project. It means they knew that the idea for the angel wings came from their use to block the WBC at the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was murdered in Wyoming in 1998.
The original “Angel Action” was a counterprotest organized by LGBTQ activist Romaine Patterson, who had been a friend of Shepard’s in high school. This is part of our history. We’ve been shielding our loved ones from hate groups while we bury our dead for decades – and that deserves acknowledgement.

As a fanfiction writer, it’s taken me a long time to come to this realization, and ever since I have, I’ve been so much happier with my views of my work and my self-esteem. The person my fanfiction is written for is ME. When other people enjoy it, that’s wonderful and it makes me happy, but I shouldn’t beat myself up if people don’t. It’s not for them. It’s for me.
YES! Every once in a while, I’ll be like, “Ugh, this is such wish fulfillment garbage for MYSELF, what worthless trash.” And then I’m like, “Wait, no, that’s why I’m writing it.” If other people don’t like it? meh.
also a great reason not to hassle fic writers over not making content to your exact specifications.
Additionally, it can help a lot to remember that you don’t have to post everything you make. It’s a weird culture that the internet and social media have created where it feels like you have to share everything, which leads into the creeping worry that everything you make has to be Marketable™ enough to share, and the next thing you know, you’re quietly shoveling all of your good, fun stuff that you’d otherwise be making for yourself under the rug in favour of things that you think other people will like more.
Like, if you’re that worried that other people won’t like what you’re making, all you have to do is not post it. It’s literally that simple. Don’t avoid making things because you’re worried about what The Internet will think of them; just fucking go ahead and make them and then don’t post them. You’re allowed to not post things! You’re allowed to have ~secret works~ that are just for you!
Having things that you keep to yourself can and will help you learn to enjoy art and writing for its own sake again, if you’re finding that social media has made it difficult for you. A+ technique, can definitely recommend. ( b ._.)b
