Happy Endings

they deserve happy endings,

right?

A Boy meets a wondrous Girl and

they fall in love oh so deeply that

they couldn’t be any happier and—

a Boy that follows fantasies and

treasure-filled adventure will find a

home in the wild jungle vines and—

a Boy taking careful time to see

the goodness in them all because

he’s so filled with pure light and—

they all deserve happy endings,

right?

But oh that wild Boy found a home

in that lovely Girl’s heart instead

of his crazed wilderness and—

that glassy Boy she broke would be left

with only flames of jealousy and pain

where love used to live freely and—

that light Boy who found joy in everyone

would be dropped right in the middle

of a war-zone he didn’t want because—

they all deserve happy endings but

none of them got them.

And so the Homesick Boy would

find jokes in death so funny that

it and destruction were his playthings and—

the Pure Boy would be imprisoned with

the Lovesick Girl in a broken body

never meant to live again and—

our Jealous Boy would walk away

crippled with his own painful revenge

that would stay with him ever after and oh you—

You are sentenced to live out your days

as a silent passerby holding none of the

answers with all of the unjustness and—

they all deserve the happy endings of

fabled baffle-torn victims

and they’ll all whisper to themselves

when no one else can hear their pleads,

“It’s not fair, is it?”

and oh how I wish I could say

it was

then maybe this would be less

of a tragedy and more

of a cautionary tale.
