William (The Colonel) saw the Jims still in the manor as he searched for Damien and Celine. He was in the verge of completely breaking down and giving up. He saw that the Jims worked for a news channel.

Concluding that his friends were still hiding from him he asked for a job because he had no cash to travel to find them. He became a journalist under the stage name of Wilford Warfstache and donned a new look to make himself stand out as he worked to bag a spot in the network. He could then travel the world using the news channel’s dollar. That way he could search everywhere to find his friends, interviewing people to get answers and killing them when they had nothing important to tell him, thinking that they were part of the game too.

When people were horrified to see what he had done, he’d very calmly say that everything was alright and that he’d come back later when the person “woke up” before leaving to continue his search.
