Humans are Very Unexpected

space-australia-stories:

Things could not have gone more wrong. Their mission had simply been to break in, free the prisoners, and get out. Not entirely complex, and with several humans on their team, the Draxians were not worried. That confidence had vanished the moment one of the “prisoners” pulled an energy rifle on them.

The tables had been turned so abruptly that the crew didn’t have any time to react. With growing panic, they realized that they had been led into a trap. They were outnumbered by the prisoners four to one, and Draxians were not natural fighters. They were strategists, good at coming up with foolproof plans that needed no fighting. In case of any unexpected mistakes – which never happened – humans were brought on recovery missions for their warrior-like tendencies and quick thinking.

Sadly, three unprepared humans were still no match for forty armed fighters. The Draxians were realizing their defeat, and started raising their hands in surrender, tails swishing nervously and spines rippling with fear. The humans too were putting down their weapons. The average human was shorter than Draxians. The three humans in their party were shorter and female, biologically weaker and therefore at a disadvantage. They must have realized this as well.

As the fighters started tightening the circle that surround the rescue party, the three humans looked to each other and nodded. To any of the Draxians present, there was no meaning to these gazes, but the humans seemed to have understood each other perfectly, even in the absence of verbal conversation. This was a skill that humans were good at.

Suddenly, and simultaneously, the three humans each rushed a different fighter. One of them split her pole-like weapon into two bludgeoning sticks as they expertly disarmed three fighters. Using her sticks as extra projectiles the first human knocked out two more fighters and then picked up two of the discarded energy rifles. Her two companions stood to either side of her, blocking blasts with their poles from the rest of the fighters, who had come back to their senses and were firing on them.

The Draxians fell to the ground to escape the fire above them. They watched in awe as one of the humans with a pole vaulted herself onto the shoulders of one of the fighters and threw him to the ground with her legs wrapped around his neck. She kicked his rifle over to the cowering Draxians as she knocked the fighter out.

“Could use some help, guys,” she panted, not even looking their way as she returned to shield her companion again.

Finally stunned out of action, the Draxians, who had been forgotten in the moment, picked up either their own weapons or energy rifles that had been dropped and began shooting at the fighters. The humans continued their strange movement of shooting, deflecting, and throwing fighters to the ground if they got too close, cutting a path through their ranks. Several Draxians were hit in the fight, but in the end, with the help of the humans, all of the fighters were either unconscious or dead. The rescue party that had started out as a party of ten, was now reduced to three humans and three Draxians. The three Draxians looked on at the humans with a mix of fear and reverence, their spines rippling with worry.

The middle one spoke up first. “How did you do that?,” he asked. “I have never seen a fighter like that since the barbarians of Tiamid invaded my homeland. Where have you learned such a fierce fighting style?”

The women exchanged knowing glances, and one of them laughed, wiping sweat from her forehead. “We took a personal defense class before we enlisted. We never thought we’d ever use it here.”

With that they laughed with each other again, and the Draxians became wary of humans from then on.
