Chapter 9 – Lost Control
“He said what?!”
“He said he had to go to the hospital for some assessment thing,” Marvin replied to Chase. The five of them were stood in Jack’s office completely unsure what to do now that Jack was gone. “He told us not to leave the house until he got back.”
“Vell, how long is he going to be?” Schneeple asked, worry tinging his voice.
“He didn’t say,” Jackaboy replied, “An officer caught him talking to us before he could say.”
“He caught you?!” Robbie asked, “He knows about us?!”
“I didn’t mean he caught is in that way,” Jackaboy replied, “I meant he caught Jack talking to his toilet like an idiot and started asking questions. Jack his us pretty well.”
“This is just fucking fantastic, isn’t it?!” Chase snapped, “Jack’s gone and fucked off to god knows where without telling us! What are we supposed to do while he’s gone?!”
“I think this was about as last minute for him as it was for us.” Marvin replied, “He said not to leave the house and to just lay low, so we should probably do that.”
“Zhat would be zhe smartest thing to do.” Schneeple agreed, “Let’s lay low and wait until he comes back. He won’t be long, surely.”***
The police car pulled up outside the hospital just as Jack managed to pull himself together. He spontaneous panic attack had lasted the entire journey, but surprisingly he felt better after it.
Everything’s going to be fine, he thought, I’ll go in, get checked over, come out, and then I can concentrate on the egos.
He stepped into the hospital and his mood completely changed.
He wasn’t sure what it was about the room that set him off: the antibiotic smell, the sight of doctors walking round in white, the sounds of machinery or something else, but whatever it was it made him stop dead. Memories of the lab flooded his mind, the pain and torture he’d been trying so long to forget happily crawled out from the deep recesses of his mind, forcing him to relive it in vivid detail. It was enough to make him collapse to the ground again and scream.
“What’s wrong?!” Officer Taylor cried, crouching down in front of Jack and gripping his shoulders, “What’s wrong?!”
“Please don’t take me back!” Jack screeched, shutting his eyes tight to try and make sense of the confusion in his mind, “Please don’t take me back there! I can’t do it again! I can’t!”
“Can’t do what again?!” Officer Taylor asked, panicking herself because she couldn’t tell what was wrong.
“What’s going on?” Officer Turner asked.
Anti…please…make this…stop…Jack thought in desperation as he sobbed on the floor.
Make it stop? Anti asked, giggling as he spoke, why? I thought just you’d love to be reminded of the last time you were in a place like this.
Why…?! Jack thought. He felt like he was shouting to Anti through the chaos of memories and thoughts that clouded his head. He barely noticed the officers stand him up and walk him through the reception.
Why? Anti repeated in a mock impression of Jack, Why? Well, that’s a question and a half, isn’t it? I did this to distract you.
Distract me from wh-?
Then he felt it. Something in the back of his mind. Something that felt very familiar. The worst thing was, it was getting bigger, taking over his mind bit by bit.
Anti…no…was all Jack could think. He could hear the muffled voices of the officers speaking to them, but it didn’t help.
Remember when I said that being distracted made it easy for me to take control? Anti asked. Jack collapsed to the ground again, clutching his head as he tried to fight against Anti’s control. You really should have paid attention to that. Oh, and here’s another thing you should have paid attention to! He chuckled again, Remember when you and that zombie freak had the same dream? I said that whoever made you do that may have just been toying with you? I…may have lied. In reality, I was trying to warn you.
Warn me of what? Jack thought, struggling to think anything of his own with Anti such a big presence in his mind now.
I was trying to warn you that history was going to repeat. I was trying to warn you that I was going to take control like that again, just like how I did to that zombie. The officers were still talking to him, but Jack couldn’t hear what they were saying. He was sure there were other people in whatever room they were but he couldn’t tell. He felt blind.
But…why…? Jack thought, his mind hurting with the strain of trying to think, Why…? They haven’t done anything to you…they’re innocent!
Innocent? Anti laughed, You thought so yourself. One of these shits is secretly working for the lab and were planning to take you back. I just have to find out which one…Jack struggled for a little longer, but it was no use. A few moments later, Anti had full control. The officers saw Jack go from screaming and crying to limp and silent.
“Sean…?” Officer Jones asked, placing a hand on Jack’s shoulder. After a moment, Jack’s head snapped round with unimaginable speed to face the officer, eyes snapping open. Except it wasn’t Jack anymore. The eyes were now pitch black and gleaming with anger and joy all at the same time. Officer Taylor screamed when she saw this. Anti giggled and turned to face her.
“Hello!” He said.CHAPTER 10: N/A
