A message for new Miles Morales fans!

There’s gonna be alot more Miles Morales fans after Into The Spiderverse comes out in a few weeks, and the movie isn’t going to be able to cover everything about his character/supporting cast, so I thought I’d make a post about everything the movie looks like it’ll miss as Miles has been my favourite character since his introduction in 2011.

– Originally, Miles got his powers long before Peter Parker died. But because his family hated superheroes, and Spider-Man (Parker) was already doing and good job, he didn’t use them. Then one day the goblin finally succeeded in killing Peter Parker on Miles’ family lawn, and Miles could’ve stopped it if it weren’t for his own inactivity. Therefore leaving New York without a guardian and giving Miles Morales his own “Uncle Ben” moment.

– Miles best friend Ganke is fat. He’s not ashamed of it and genuinely a significant step for body positivty in a world of Dorito shaped vacum-wrapped superheroes. The film doesn’t seem to have this element of his character in the trailers. Miles and Ganke literally have conversations about times Ganke has been body shamed and how it affects his every day life, despite being happy with his own body.

– Miles Morales’ character has been significantly impacted by his friendship with Sam Alexander’s Nova (a good albeit generic character who deals with living in his father’s shadow) and even more so by Kamela Kahn’s Mrs Marvel (a 14 year old Muslim girl from New Jersey whos superpowers include super strength and shape shifting, but do NOT include managing her families expectations of her religiosity and the islamaphobia of the kids her age). Her comics are genuinely exceptional and also the ANAD phase of Marvel was filled with alot of bad characters her run is some of the best work marvel has done in years. Highly recommended.

– Miles’ father, in the comics, isn’t a member of the police force but instead a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. on a task-force made specifically to control or limit the activities of super-people like Spider-Man. He also hates all superheroes with ever fibre of his being and speaks about it to Miles all the time. This is significantly implied to be a metaphor for how homophobic parents can damage their child’s self esteem if they don’t realise their children are in the closet. Marvel will never outright acknowledge this because, well, Disney. But it’s still an incredibly well done aspect of Miles story that passed way over the heads of many straight readers.

– The only superhero Miles’ father DOES like, is Luke Cage, due to him not having a secret identity and living and working within their own community instead of living in mansions and fighting aliens.

– Miles and Gwen Stacey canonically get married in the future, and their relationsip lasts at least 30 years, as we see their 30th anniversary. This is only every seen in one issue and is never acknowledged again. Miles occasionally refers to Gwen as “his girlfriend from another universe” and everyone laughs at him. It’s a weird storyline.

– Miles Uncle and him don’t actually fight that often. You’d think that they’d be rivals at every step of their career but Miles uncle seems genuinely interested in helping Miles along his career, despite making Miles promise to stay out of his way in return for information on other super villians.

– At the beginning, the Marvel characters hated Miles almost as much as Marvel fans (he was NOT popular to begin with). In-universe, it was considered insensitive to run around in a Spider-Man costume pretending to be Peter Parker only days after his funeral. The suit crappy Miles seems to use in this movie seems to be a reference to his first Spider-Man costume, which was a Halloween costume from his childhood. Spider-woman (a clone of Peter Parker) attacks Miles and threatens him until he takes the costume off. Eventually he gets a red and black suit provided to him by shield.

And that seems to be the most of it! I’ll update this post incase I missed anything. I’m SUPER looking forward to all the Miles Morales fans as he is genuinely and incredible character and I can’t wait for more people to discover him and his story!!!! The more the merrier!!
