In the Dead of Night

Anti wakes with a sick feeling in his stomach. Something is off about this morning. He looks over to JJ’s bed and realizes he’s gone already. Normally, Anti would disregard this as normal, but today, he feels something wrong. So he glitches to the kitchen, where his other brothers sit and eat.

Chase is the first one to look up, “Anti! You’re joining us for breakfast?”

Anti cautiously nods, maybe JJ is still in the shower. Marvin hands Anti a plate, smiling almost cautiously. Jackieboy watches Anti closely. Anti gets food and glitches to the table to sit. His brothers jump a little as he does. He sits down, and tries to ignore them eyeing him nonchalantly.

“So,” Marvin says, “What brings you out this morning? Usually you don’t eat with us unless you’re up to something.” Chase kicks him under the table, and Marvin exclaims, “Ow!”

Anti twitches nervously, “I’m not really sure. I woke up anxious this morning. Like something is wrong. Maybe I just had a bad dream I can’t remember.”

Chase nods and smiles a bit through a mouthful of food, “Maybe so.”

After a while, however, JJ still hasn’t emerged. Anti is not even the first to say something.

“Is JJ still in bed?” Jackieboy asks, “Usually he’s up by now.” His tone seems almost accusatory, but Anti’s mind is already racing.

“I thought he would be out here, and then I thought maybe he was in the shower.” Anti twitches faster.

“No,” Marvin says, “Henrik is still in his morning shower. He’s just starting hour two.”

Anti glitches from the table to his room, and the door soon busts open with his ego brothers rushing in. In his morning haze, Anti didn’t even notice the clean white envelope with the perfect cursive reading “Septic Egos”.

Anti rips open the envelope, and out drops a golden monocle. JJ’s monocle. Inside there is a letter that reads,

It’s easy to get the one that can’t scream for help.

…. oh damn.

That last line got me.
