What if the reason Wilford starts acting more uncaring and less frantic about his friends, is because he’s losing his memory of them? His mind is trying to block it out because it makes him hurt so much.
He sees Dark and thinks ‘oh that’s just my business partner, I haven’t even known him that long’
He has nightmares of bloody hands and frantic screaming and trying desperately to reach out, but when he wakes up screaming no… he sobs and asks ‘why am I crying?’
Once in a while, another ego might ask him why he killed someone and when he shrugs and says ‘well they’ll just come back’, they ask him why he thinks that and he just stares into nothing for a second because he can’t remember why, he can’t remember what made him think that and then the person tries to tell him the truth, that people die forever, and Wilford starts getting frantic and yelling and screaming and pulling at his hair and scratching until he locks himself in his room and when the egos see him a few days it’s like nothing happened.. and if they ask him what happened, he just looks at them blankly and turns away.
And then.. sometimes he slips.. and he starts to rant and rave about how they’re hiding, they’re just hiding, it’s just a joke, and he’s getting more and more panicked and he can barely breathe and he’s searching and searching until finally Dark stops him. In a calm voice he says ‘Wilford stop’ and hearing his new name almost snaps him out of it and he looks up at Dark with tear filled eyes and Dark can see how confused and hurt he is and Wilford whispers ‘Damien?’ and Dark puts his hands on Wilford’s shoulder and looks him in the eyes and in a gentle but firm voice he says ‘I am Dark and you are Wilford and everything is okay’ and Wilford’s eyes cloud over and his tears dry up and he pulls away from Dark with a weird look, not even looking back before he leaves the room. And for a second Dark stays there, just shaking as he tries to breathe and cover up any sadness or grief on his face and suddenly his shell cracks a bit and what’s left of Damien screams in rage because how dare he do this to them, how dare he, and with that he leaves the room too
