Chapter 16 – Flying in a Giant Tin Can on Wheels

“We’re here.” Officer Taylor said.

Jack looked out of the window of Taylor’s 4-by-4 at his surroundings, but instead of seeing an airport like he was expecting, he found a small runway with a small white plane sitting on it and single building to the side. Apart from that, there was nothing but fields.
“Um…Officer?” Jack said, “We are going to Dublin, right? I thought we’d be going to an airport.”
“We are at an airport,” Officer Taylor replied, “Just not a public one. And please, call me Jane.” She then looked to the back of the car. “Is everyone ready?” She asked. Jack also looked to the back of the car at the egos.
“Whoa! This is cool!” Marvin cried, his face pressed to the window. Chase was fast asleep and snoring.
“I zhink I’m going to be sick…” Schneeple groaned, clutching his stomach.
“Why did Jack get to sit in the front?!” Jackaboy said in a sulking tone, trying to move his now dead legs under the dead weight that was Robbie, who was sat on his lap. During the journey, he’d even stuck his head out of the window with his tongue sticking out like a dog.
“Robbie’s ok!” Robbie said, bringing his head back into the car.
Jack smiled at the ridiculous scene before him.
“I think they’re ready.” he said with a chuckle.
“Great!” Jane said, smiling too, “Let’s go!”

The six of them got out of the car and started to make their way to the building until Schneeple bent over and vomited on the ground.
“Oh, fuck! That’s gross!” Chase said, “That’s not what I wanted to wake up to!”
“Ewww!” Marvin said, running away from Schneeple and up to Jack. Jackaboy looked pale but said nothing.
“It’s ok!” Jane said, calmly walking up to Schneeple, who was still puking his guts out, and putting a hand on his back, rubbing it gently. “It’s just a basic case of travel sickness.”
“I didn’t get zhis on zhe train to Brighton!” Scneeple managed to choke out before throwing up again.
“Maybe you just didn’t think about it,” Jane said, “You probably had much bigger things on your mind at that point.”
“You can say that again,” Jack muttered, trying not to look at the vomit.

Once Schneeple had finished puking, he straightened up slowly and took a second to right himself before turning to Jane.
“Thank you,” he said, “I feel better for zhat.”
“I don’t!” Chase said.
“You’re welcome,” Jane said, chuckling at Chase’s comment, “Let’s go, they’ll be wondering where we are.”
“They?” Jack said, suddenly suspicious.
“Yes,” Jane said, “Don’t worry, they’re with me. Come on!” With this, she turned and started walking towards the building again. Jack and the other reluctantly followed.

When they walked towards the building, a man wearing all black saw them and came out of it. He had black hair which was tied up in a man-bun and was staring at them with dark blue eyes.
“I don’t like this,” Chase muttered to Jack.
“Me neither,” Jack muttered back, “I didn’t realize she was going to have an entourage.”
The man waved to them as they approached.
“Hi, Jane!” He called. Jane waved back. Once they got up to the man Jane introduced him.
“Everyone, this is Steven Roberts. He’s an old friend of mine and also works for Intex, though he and a few of his men have agreed to help our cause. Steven,” she said, gesturing to the group one by one as she said their names, “This is Chase Brody, Dr. Schneeplestein, Jackaboy Man, Marvin the Magician, Robbie, and Jack.”
“Hi…” Jack said awkwardly, deciding to break the silence since no one else spoke.
Steven stared at them for a while, not saying a word. Jack immediately felt uncomfortable and took a step back. This motion made Steven snap out of his trance.
“Sorry! Sorry!” He said quickly, “It’s just…I heard about the whole ‘splitting human conscience’ experiment that the London branch was doing, and how it was successful, I just didn’t realize how successful it had been…”
“Yes, but, let’s move past that for now and concentrate on the present,” Jane said, noticing the ego’s discomfort, “is the plane ready?”
“Ah, um, yes!” Steven said, dragging his eyes away from the group and turning to Jane, “Follow me, please.”

The group started to make their way towards the large white plane.
“Wait…” Jackaboy said, “We’re going in that?!”
“Yep,” Steven replied.
“But…I mean…why?” Jack asked, “What’s the difference between this and a public plane?”
“You’ll see,” Jane said, turning to smile at him. Jack didn’t feel entirely convinced by that smile.
Another man stepped out of the plane as they got closer, and he and Steven talked about plane stuff the Jack didn’t really understand. Eventually, they were instructed to get on the plane. Jane, Steven and the man (who Jack figured out was one of the pilots) got in first, leaving Jack and the egos outside, staring dumbly at the plane.
“You know vhen I said zhat train ve vent on looked like a giant tin can of wheels?” Schneeple said, “I take it back. Zhis looks like a giant tin can on vheels.”
“Well,” Chase said, pushing Jack forward, “Ladies first!”
“Oh brilliant, thanks,” Jack muttered as he clambered in. Schneeple went next, and what followed was a bit of struggle to get Robbie in as he suddenly decided he didn’t like the “giant tin can”; eventually Chase scooped Robbie up and practically threw him in. Once Jack had got Robbie calmed down, the others got in, settling in their seats in a mix of anxiety and wonder.
“Put your helmets on!” Steven said from the cockpit.
“What’s a helmet?” Marvin asked.
“This thing,” Jack and Jane said at the same time, both gesturing to the helmets hanging above them. Jane chuckled at their synchronization, but Jack narrowed his eyes slightly. He was starting to not like the fact that Jane was taking over his role as the parental figure.

After some confusion with how to put the helmets on (at least three of them somehow managed to put them on the wrong way round), they were ready to go. Steven instructed them to pull the microphones down, saying that they were “the sticks attached to your helmets”. Once they all had done this, Steven started to talk to the other pilot. Everyone could hear the conversation through the headphones in their helmets.
“Whoa!” Marvin said loudly, “This sounds so weird!”
“Yep…” Steven said. Jack could tell he was slowly getting more and more agitated with them. He was about to instruct the others to be quiet when Jane did it for him.
“Be quiet everyone, just for the moment while the pilots talk!” Everyone obeyed without question.
Jack sighed.
I wonder if they would have been so obedient if I’d been the one to tell them that, he thought. He went silent for a moment, expecting a response from Anti before remembering that Anti wasn’t in his head anymore. To Jack’s surprise, this realization made him sad. He actually missed having Anti there, having secret conversations with him that no one else could hear. It was therapeutic in a weird way. Sure, Anti was a murderous psychopath, but he was also quite good at being a voice of reason. This thought made Jack wish he’d treated Anti better when he was around, instead of throwing him aside and pushing him down when he tried to take control. Maybe Anti wouldn’t have felt the need to do whatever he was about to do if Jack had just treated him better, treated him as one of them rather than a freak. All Jack had ever wanted was to keep Anti safe, but in doing so he’d made Anti worse. If he could just talk to Anti, make him realize what he was about to was wrong, maybe Anti would go back into his head and they could start again.

Jack was brought out of his thoughts by the plane slowly moving forward.
“Here we go!” Steven said over the radio. The egos cheered. Jack chuckled to himself.
What a bunch of idiots, he thought, What a bunch of lovable idiots.
The plane ran down the runway and eventually flew gracefully into the air. Once they were at a fixed altitude, Jane turned to them.
“We can talk freely now,” she said, “The pilots don’t have to concentrate as hard when we’re just flying straight. We can also take our seatbelts off now since we’re at a fixed height. There’s not much space, but you can move around if you want.”
“I just realized,” Jackaboy said, “You never answered Jack’s question: what makes this plane so special? How is this different to a normal plane?” Jane smiled again.
“Do you want me to activate it?” Steven asked, hearing the entire conversation over the radio.
“Go ahead!” Jane answered. They heard the click of a button in the cockpit. For a moment, nothing happened, until suddenly a blue haze washed over every part of the plane. The seats, the seatbelts, the controls, even the headsets everyone was wearing became coated in the blue glow. Robbie growled at the haze and tried to scratch it, but snapped his hand away and whimpered when nothing happened. Everything stayed like that for a while until the blue haze vanished.
“That was awesome!” Chase cried. The others agreed.
“What did that do?” Jack asked, “I don’t see any chance to the plane…”
“We’re now completely invisible,” Steven answered, “Anyone looking up at the sky from the ground won’t be able to see us. Even air traffic control stations won’t see us. We’re completely invisible to all airspace.”
“Wow…” Schneeple said, looking around the plane in wonder.
“So, no one can see us? Like, at all?” Marvin asked. He had his face pressed to the window so he could see the clouds.
“Nope!” Jane said, “Amazing, right? The Dublin Intex branch won’t know we’re coming!”
“Isn’t that a little dangerous?” Jack asked with a frown, “I mean, if air traffic control can’t detect us, they won’t be able to warm other planes of our presence. We might-“
“Steven knows what he’s doing,” Jane interrupted, before taking off her seatbelt and turning to Robbie (who was still whimpering) and trying to comfort him. “It’s ok-“
“It’s fine!” Jack said, taking off his own seatbelt and helmet quickly and shuffling down the plane towards Robbie, “I can handle this.”
“Oh…alright,” Jane said.

Jack crouched next to Robbie and put his arms around him. Robbie did the same, purring when Jack rubbed his head.
“It’s alright,” he said quietly, “We’ll be off this thing soon enough.”
Their quiet moment was interrupted by Schneeple speaking.
“I’m really sorry to interrupt but…has anyvone got somevhing I can be sick into?”

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about his father, who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. At his father’s funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie’s room, Billie simply said, “Wake me up when September ends.”

So I’d be angry too if people kept this shit up every single year.

i am going to reblog this until i die

…oh

Seriously its just not funny and I wish people would stop

I reblog this every fucking year. Leave them alone.
