Chapter 17 – Heart to Zombie Heart

“This is so fucking cool!” Chase cried. He had his face pressed to the window and was staring out at the clouds below him with childlike wonder in his eyes.
“I know, right?!” Marvin said with a massive smile on his face.
“Hey look!” Jackaboy cried, pointing out the window, “Another plane!”
“Oh yeah!” Chase said, his smile growing wider.
“We’re not gonna crash into it, are we?” Marvin asked, slightly concerned, “I mean, it can’t see us can it?”
“I’m sure Steven knows what he’s doing,” Jack said at the exact same time Jane said: “We’ll be fine! Steven knows what he’s doing!” Jack glared at Jane again but said nothing.
Don’t be so selfish, Jack, he thought, she’s only trying to help.
But he just couldn’t help but feel Jane was starting to take his place. Jack had never seen himself as the leader of this group (he never liked to put himself above others like that) but he did see himself as sort of a father figure to these egos. He’s vowed when they had first escaped to keep them all safe – Anti included – and that’s what he’d been trying to do. But now it seemed that Jane was starting to take the egos away from him, and the fact she was doing that without Jack even being sure if he could fully trust her yet made him uneasy.

“Hey Jane,” Chase asked, “How did you get this plane anyway? It’s so cool!”
“Our Intex branch has been working on this kind of technology for a while now,” Jane replied, “We developed a ‘cover’ of your will, for objects that reflect light, rendering the object invisible to the human eye. That’s how this plane can’t be seen.”
“Right…” Chase said, his smile fading slightly as he tried to work out what the hell any of what Jane said meant. Seeing Chase’s confusion, Jack opened his mouth to explain reflection and refraction of light and how light allowed us to see, only to have Jane end up doing it for him. It was almost like she was intentionally interrupting him when he was about to explain something.
What do I even try? He thought, slouching down further in his seat (which he’d returned to after calming Robbie down) and looking out the window to try and not feel so helpless.
“Jack is sad!” Robbie said, pulling on his seatbelt to try and get to Jack, “Why is Jack sad?”
Jack turned to Robbie and smiled sadly, leaning over to undo Robbie’s seatbelt so he could come over. Robbie shook himself out of his helmet and sprang into the seat next to Jack and crouched on it, hands and feet on the seat to steady himself. Jack took off his own helmet so no one else could hear what they were saying.
“It’s ok, Robbie,” Jack said, scratching Robbie’s chin. Robbie purred in satisfaction for a moment, before whimpering.
“Robbie doesn’t like to see Jack sad!” Robbie said. Then he noticed Jack staring at Jane, who was still explaining light to Chase, Marvin, and Jackaboy. They were looking at her intently, entranced by every word. “Robbie doesn’t trust police lady,” Robbie growled, crouching slightly in his seat, “Jack doesn’t trust her either.”
“It’s not that I don’t trust her, it’s just-” Jack sighed, “Well, I still don’t know whether to fully trust her yet, but it just I feel like she’s replacing me.”
“How?” Robbie asked, staring at Jack with wide eyes. Jack struggled to find the words to explain his feelings, but Robbie seemed to read his mind and said, “Jack thinks police lady is going to take clones away.”
“Well…yeah…” Jack said.
“Don’t worry, Jack,” Robbie said, leaning over so he was snuggling into Jack’s side, “Robbie won’t leave you! Robbie will be a good boy and stay next to Jack because Jack is Robbie’s master.”
Jack blinked in surprise.
“Master?” He said.
“Yeah!” Robbie replied, “Robbie has been looking for a master ever since he was created. He thought the white coated people would be his masters, but they didn’t pay attention to him. Then he thought the demon would be a master, but he wasn’t a very good one because he controlled Robbie. Then he thought Jack would be a good master, and he was right! Jack is a good master! Robbie just wishes the others would see that.” Jack didn’t know what to say. He smiled before finally speaking.
“I’m…not a master of anyone. Not of you, not of any of the others. I’m not above any of you, ok? We’re all in the same boat. I just somehow ended up taking the leadership role because…I don’t know…I knew more about the world? I was the only one who knew where we were? I have no idea. I’m flattered that you think that highly of me, Robbie, but I’m not a master, ok? I’m a friend.”
“Jack is not a master. Jack is a friend.” Robbie repeated.
“That’s right,” Jack said, smiling and ruffling Robbie’s hair, “Thanks, Robbie.”

It was then Jack noticed Jane was mouthing something to him. He quickly put on his headset.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” He asked.
“I said: Are you two ok over there?” Jane said.
“Oh, yeah we’re fine!” Jack said, “Just having a little talk, that’s all.”
“Have you seen this, Jack?!” Marvin said, forcing himself away from the window and looking at Jack with wide eyes, “’This is amazing!”
“Yeah,” Jack said, looking out of the window next to him at the fluffy white clouds that scattered the pale blue sky, “It’s beautiful.”
“I vhold look, but zhat would probably make me more ill,” Schneeple said, speaking up for the first time in a while. He was sat at the back of the plane now, clutching a plastic sick bucket Jane had found on the plane.
“Are you sure you’re ok?” Jack asked, “You look very pale.”
“You do!” Jane agreed, making Jack sag slightly, “Are you sure you’re ok?”
“I’ll be fine,” Schneeple said with a lopsided smile, “Just as long as I don’t look out the window and concentrate on looking straight ahead, I should be fine.”
“Alright,” Jack said, not entirely convinced. He made a mental note to keep checking on Schneeple for the rest of the trip.

Although it turned out there wasn’t that much of a trip left.
“We’re nearly at our destination,” Steven said over the radio, “Please put your seatbelts on as we’ll be landing shortly.” As everyone scrambled to put their seatbelts on, Jack glanced at Jane, who returned the gaze. Jack said nothing, though when Jane gave him a questioning look, he looked away.
“Don’t worry, Jack,” Robbie said quietly. He didn’t have a headset on so Jane wouldn’t hear, “It’s going to be ok, Robbie promises.”
